I have been awarded an OPUS LAP grant from the National Science Centre (NCN), Poland.

The title of the awarded proposal is “Microhydrodynamics of three-dimensional odd viscous fluids”. The project will be implemented together with Andrej Vilfan from the Jožef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Within this project I have new open PhD positions. If you are interested in working with me on such projects, please get in touch with me directly.

This year I take part in the organisation for the 8th Warsaw School of Statistical Physics, which will be held in Chęciny, Poland on 29 June - 5 July 2025. Deadline for registrations and poster submissions is 11 April 2025.

The school is primarily aimed at introducing young scientists (PhD students and early career researchers) to the most important areas of research in the field of statistical physics and its applications to complex natural systems. The School will be an opportunity for participants to interact directly with leading scientists in this rapidly growing field, with lecture courses given by:

Arezki Boudaoud
Ecole Polytechnique, France
“Plant growth: a journey across scales”

Julyan Cartwright
Universidad de Granada, Spain
“Pattern formation in nature”

Fabian Essler
University of Oxford, UK
“Non-equilibrium dynamics of many-particle quantum systems and conservation laws”

Randy Kamien
University of Pennsylvania, USA
“The Geometry and Topology of Soft Materials”

Roberto M. Serra
Federal University of ABC, São Paulo, Brazil
“Quantum Thermodynamics”

The lectures will be supplemented by problem solving sessions, giving a practical insight into the concepts discussed. Further information can be found on the website. The school poster can be found here.

Laura Meissner has presented her work on the Theoretical Physics symposium 2024.

On 5-6 December 2024, the Institute of Theoretical Physics at the Faculty of Physics UW, established by Professor Leopold Infeld, organized a two-day symposium on theoretical physics, which brings together experts from different areas of physics. On the second day of the symposium Laura presented her MSc project in the form of a flash talk. In particular, she focused on the Stokes flow around a single sphere in the presence of odd viscosity.

Reinier van Buel joins our group as a postdoctoral research associate. Starting from December 2024 he will be working on charge dynamics in anisotropic fluids. Welcome!

The figure above is taken from one of Reinier’s paper before he joined our group, where he studied the onset of elastic turbulence in a two-dimensional Taylor-Couette geometry using numerical solutions of the Oldroyd-B model. See here for the paper, which is also available on arXiv as open access.

I have been awarded a SONATA BIS grant from the National Science Centre (NCN), Poland.

The title of the awarded proposal is “Nematic electrolytes in and out of equilibrium: Effects of anisotropy, ferroelectricity, and activity”. With this funding, I can build a research group in the coming five years to investigate the effects of ions on liquid crystals. If you are interested in working with me on such projects, please get in touch with me directly or keep an eye on the Group section of this website.
